The liver - our mother

The liver's ability to eliminate toxins requires the ability to differentiate and evaluation, otherwise detoxification will not work.

What does hepatic biotransformation mean?

The task of liver detoxification is to convert fat-soluble substances produced during metabolism into water-soluble substances, facilitating their excretion via urine, stool, or sweat. Examples of substances metabolized in the liver include hormones, drugs, and xenobiotics—foreign substances that enter the body's detoxification pathways.

Phases of liver detoxification

As a rule, detoxification occurs in three phases:

Phase 1: Fat-soluble toxins are prepared in the liver for excretion via the kidneys in a water-soluble form. This process sometimes produces intermediate products that are more toxic than the original substances. We refer to this process as toxification.

Phase 2: Through various metabolic pathways in the liver—such as methylation, glucuronidation, sulfation, acetylation, and glutathione conjugation—these substances are bound to other molecules, making them more water-soluble and suitable for excretion.

Phase 3: The metabolized substances are then excreted via the intestines into the stool, provided that bile synthesis is sufficient and the gallbladder is functioning properly.

But what happens if the liver can no longer do this sufficiently?

The metabolite that is not broken down in the liver is considered a toxin. If detoxification fails, a gradually increasing chemical-toxic load becomes a risk to the body. This can impair the body's ability to regulate inflammatory states, reduce chemical tolerance, and, for example, contribute to the development of autoimmune responses.

  • In phase 1, the substances become more immunoreactive and pro-inflammatory. Phase 2 normally stabilizes these substances immediately. However, detoxification can be impaired by genetic predispositions, an unhealthy diet, and lifestyle factors.

  • If liver detoxification is blocked in phase 2, there are two possibilities. First: If detoxification is insufficient in phase 1, pro-inflammatory substances—such as environmental toxins—enter phase 2, where the process cannot be completed. Toxic substances re-entering the circulation activate immune responses and cause inflammation.

  • Second: Inactive substances, such as xenoestrogens (especially bisphenol A), are converted into immunoreactive substances. If these cannot be detoxified, they bind to hormone receptors and disrupt metabolism. In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in hormone-active tumors, such as breast, prostate, and colon cancers.

Support for phases 1 and 2

Milk thistle extracts, dandelion root extracts, Asian ginseng, N-acetylcysteine, and methionine not only support and promote phases 1 and 2 of detoxification but also enhance blood circulation and cell growth in the liver.

Promotion of bile formation and bile flow

Milk thistle extract, dandelion root extract, bitter substances such as wormwood or gentian, celandine, phosphatidylcholine (lecithin), and taurine. Moist liver compresses should be applied in the evening.

FAQ's

Why is the liver so important for our body?

The liver, one of the most important organs in the body, filters the blood, eliminates harmful microorganisms and controls the growth of body cells. It aids digestion by producing bile and stores nutrients while regulating blood sugar levels. A healthy liver is therefore crucial for our general well-being.

Which symptoms indicate liver problems?

Signs of possible liver problems can include jaundice, tiredness, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and dark urine. However, it is often not noticed until later that something is wrong, as many liver diseases do not show any symptoms at first. Regular examinations are important to detect potential problems at an early stage.

What can I do for my liver myself?

Make sure you eat a balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables, wholegrain products and lean protein. Regular physical activity will help you avoid obesity and reduce the risk of fatty liver disease. Also drink plenty of water to keep your body well hydrated and support your liver.
